Things happen without you trying. They get to be light and relaxed. You must get an Alexander teacher to show it to you.

Missy Vineyard, March 30 – April 5

Workshops and private lessons

The content of these workshops draws from the ideas and self-experiments that Missy presents in her book How You Stand, How You Move, How You Live.

A: Wednesday, April 1, 9 – 4:30: Exploring the Four Skills of Inhibition
In this workshop we will explore the “four pitfalls” of learning to inhibit, and then practice four cognitive skills designed to help us overcome them. Putting these together, the four skills of inhibition give us a way of understanding and exploring inhibition more deeply within ourselves and teaching it more effectively.

B: Thursday, April 2, 9 – 4:30: Taking A Closer Look At Directing
What is the physiological basis of directing? How does it enhance locomotor skill? Is there a better way to teach it? In this workshop we will explore these topics and learn ways to practice directing with greater conscious skill.

C: Friday, April 3, 9 – 4:30: Fear: How It Impacts Learning and Teaching; The Five Key Elements of Monkey In the first half of this workshop we will explore the neural mechanisms of fear to better understand how fear impacts our coordination and our behavior, and to help us better recognize fear in our students and know how to respond. In the second half we will discuss and practice the five essential elements of a good monkey.

D: Saturday, April 4, 9 – 4:30: Hands-On: Putting Our Skills Together
This workshop will build on the work from the previous three days, giving participants a common language and experience from which to discuss, practice and develop hands-on skill.
