 Sir Stafford Cripps
The body becomes a coordinated and living whole, composed of well-fitting and truly articulated parts.
Stafford Cripps, Alexander Technique pupil

Alexander Technique and sport

AT is not about what you do, so much as the way that you do it, so it particularly challenges the "no-pain, no-gain", "just do it" approach so often associated with sport. For this reason, AT has a lot to offer sportsmen and women, particularly those for whom sport has lost its enjoyment or those with recurrent injuries.

Alexander Technique running

The Alexander Technique is used by athletes at all levels and ages - not so much to improve performance as to improve technique; increasing efficiency and reducing injuries.

The Alexander Technique can be applied to any sport (any act!). Historically the sports AT has been most applied to are running, golf, swimming and horse riding. There are local teachers who specialise in each of these - for example Martyn Jones is a specialist golf coach. Any teacher can teach you to apply AT to walking, yoga, pilates or working out in the gym.

Note that the Oxford Alexander Training school runs annual workshops in running, golf and swimming which are open to the public. Contact Stephen Cooper for details.
